Life at Mastery : Internship

Mastery Charter Schools’ Internship Program engages all students in a rigorous 18-week internship during their sophomore year of high school. An integral component to Mastery’s college-driven curriculum, the Internship Program is directly aligned with Mastery’s mission to prepare all students for competition in higher education and the global economy. Internships provide opportunities for our students to meet the demands of the professional world and to develop skills critical to college and workplace achievement.

The Internship Program is comprised of two components: an 18-week Training Seminar and an 18-week Practicum Seminar. The Internship Training Seminar provides students with instruction in work-readiness; typical topics covered include: career exploration; resume writing; business etiquette; professional dress, and interview protocol. Ultimately, this Training Seminar strives to prepare students to enter the working world with confidence and a clear understanding of the expectations for success. Internship Practicum Seminar and Placement occur concurrently. In Placement, Interns work each Wednesday afternoon from 1:30-5:00 at their internship site. Practicum Seminar asks students to deepen the observations and reflections they make during their internship experience, and culminates in a large final project.

Mastery has relationships with more than 350 mentor sites throughout Philadelphia. Internships occur at a diverse array of businesses and organizations – representing the diverse array of potential career fields of interest to Mastery students. All internships are unpaid and liability and transportation are covered by Mastery.
